Ask most married people about their wedding day and they will tell you that it was the happiest day of their lives. Ask those same people about the morning of their wedding however and they’re likely to tell you something altogether different.

There are few things in life quite as nerve wracking as the hours leading up to the big “I do”. From butterflies to last minute doubts, to say that the average bride is a little nervous would be quite the understatement. Should you find yourself wondering just how you’re going to keep it together on the morning of your big day, here are eight simple tips for doing just that.

Be Realistic

The first step towards keeping pre wedding nerves to a minimum is to accept that there’s no such thing as a perfect wedding day. Expecting yourself to be all smiles from morning until night is completely unrealistic. Instead of trying to avoid negative emotions, expect them and embrace them. Nerves and doubts are completely normal.

Keep Things in Perspective

Spend enough time obsessing over anything and it can easily take on a worldly level of importance. The reality however is that your wedding day, though important, is just that, a single day in your life. While all brides want their big day to go off without a hitch, if it doesn’t, is it really the end of the world? Keep in mind that it’s your choice of partner that’s important, not whether or not it rains on the day that the two of you get married.

Sleep Well and Eat a Big Breakfast

If you want to keep your pre wedding nerves to a minimum, a good nights sleep is essential. Avoid alcohol the night before your wedding and hit the hay as early as possible. Aim to get at least eight hours sleep and when you wake up enjoy a nice, big breakfast. The last thing that you want is to be tired and hungry as you get ready to walk down the aisle.

Stay Hydrated

Keep a bottle of water on hand at all times. Dehydration has a strange habit of making people nervous. The more water you drink, the better you will feel and the easier it will be for you to think clearly. Speaking of thinking clearly, keep your coffee consumption to a minimum. Any more than one cup and you are needlessly adding to your tension.

Give Yourself Plenty of Time

Another thing that you don’t want on the morning of your wedding is to be in a rush. There’s nothing like a tight schedule for sending an already nervous bride into a meltdown. This can be avoided in two ways. First off, wake up early. And secondly, keep your schedule free of anything other than your hair and makeup. If you find yourself having to deal with any other last minute arrangements, delegate the job to somebody that you trust.

Keep Your Vows Simple

One of the most common pre wedding worries is that you’re going to somehow forget your vows. While removing this fear completely is impossible, it can be greatly reduced in two simple ways. First off, avoid choosing vows that are overly elaborate. Keep them short, straightforward and easy to remember. And secondly, rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. By the night before your wedding, you should be able to recite them backwards.

Surround Yourself With Calming People

Before your big day, think long and hard about exactly who you want to be around in the hours leading up to the ceremony. If there’s somebody in your life who tends to have a calming effect on you, you should aim to keep them close at all times. Quite a few brides shut their friends out when they begin to get pre wedding jitters but this is actually the last thing that you should do. The more you bottle up your nerves, the worse they are going to get.

Visualise The Ceremony

Visualising an upcoming event going well is a surprisingly effective way of keeping those nerves under wraps. In fact, it’s considered so effective that many public speakers and professional athletes swear by it. As you’re getting ready for the ceremony, imagine everything going off without a hitch. Imagine yourself gracefully walking down the aisle and eloquently saying your vows without a single stumble. You might be surprised by just how calming it can be.
